Wednesday Wonder
By the time that this article drops into your e-box a group of merry travelers from Broadway Christian Church will be well into their heritage tour, having already visited Bethany, West Virginia, and with it the many associations with Alexander Campbell, and also Cane Ridge, Kentucky, site of the great 1801 revival of the same name, the stomping grounds of Barton Stone and others. By tomorrow we will be in Nashville, Tennessee, and visiting the Disciples of Christ Historical Society in short order.
We were so pleased that the congregation commissioned us for our journey during the 9:30 a.m. worship service on June 13. To make a pilgrimage, especially one rooted in some of our movement’s essential history, is to reclaim the meaningful parts of our tradition, to reincorporate the best into what we are and want to become. Though we are inhabitants of this century, and not the 19th, guiding principles have a way of living on in interesting ways. It is surprising to realize just how much we continue to be influenced by guiding ideas and the persons who brought them forward.
When we visit the Historical Society we will be hand delivering primary Broadway Christian Church documents that preserve our history in the Society’s data base. It is our hope that we will also return to you with some symbols of our larger Disciples of Christ heritage that we can proudly display at Broadway Christian Church.
